IN WORD 2007:

You may also hide text in a document.

1. Open the Word document that has text you want to hide.

2. Highlight the text you want hidden.

3. Click the down arrow in Fonts.

4. Select Hidden at the bottom right. and click OK.

How to view the hidden text in Word 2007:

1. Open the Word document with the hidden text.

2. Click on the Office Button at the top left, at the bottom click

on Word Options,

3. Click on the Display tab, and go to Always show these formatting marks on the screen, put a checkmark next to Hidden Text and click OK.

(You must undo the last #3 instruction to do more Hidden Text.)

(Also, if they steal your computer, is your data backed up or will you lose that too.)

Q. How do I find out if I have a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system?

A. Hold the Windows Key down and hit the Pause button at the top right of your keyboard.

Q. Subject: How do I get rid of this thing

Joe: I suddenly find myself with something called Personal Internet Security that has taken over my computer. I have tried everything that I can think of and can't get rid of it. I scanned with my antivirus program and it found nothing. It does not show up with my other programs. It keeps wanting me to sight up for its antivirus program. Is all lost or can you help?

A. Try doing a System Restore to a date when this was not a problem.

Response: Joe: As of right now, System Restore seems to have done the trick. Thanks again for this time and all the others.

What Is a DCIM Folder?

DCIM (for Digital Camera Images) became the default directory structure for digital cameras. Mostly it exists to keep everything organized. When you put a memory card into a camera, the camera immediately looks for a 'DCIM' folder. If it doesn't find such a folder, it creates one.

Q. Hi Joe, Got your E-card, Thanks

Problem: Printer: hp psc 1210 all-in-one. Had it for quite awhile. Today it started to print something and halfway through it stopped. Turned it off and then on ,tried again--nothing. Changed ink cartridge, tried again nothing, disconnected from tower, replaced, tried again still nothing. Any suggestions???? How do I tell if it just died ??? Help.

A. You have done everything I know to do. You are right on the ball.

With Vista or Windows 7, in the Start Search Box, type Devices and Printers

then hit Enter on your keyboard. RIGHT click on your computer icon, then click on Troubleshoot.

You might also see if you need new drivers for the printer.

You might try to Google the problem.

Response: Joe, Got it fixed going to Devices and Printers. Had to many things I wanted to copy. Deleted them and then also found out I needed ink. Thanks for help and fast response.

Q: What is the difference between hibernate and sleep options.

A: Both are alternatives to shutting down your computer. They save the exact state of your computer. When you start up the computer, everything is restored.

Sleep stores your computer's state in its memory. Most components are shut down, but some power is still applied to the memory.

Starting up is fast, but if power is lost, the memory is wiped.

It takes longer to wake a computer from hibernation because hibernation stores everything on the hard drive and then shuts down the computer. But it isn't susceptible to a power failure.

instructions.

When you click on a file with an extension like .doc Windows knows
to open Microsoft Word. Windows knows what program to open by the

Deleting a file:

When you delete a file it goes to the Recycle Bin when you delete it from there it is still on your computer (you just can't find it.) and it can be overwritten or recovered. (With a data recovery program.)

To be really safe when you give your computer away, there are free overwriting programs that will overwrite these files several times and only the CIA can recover them.

Tips for better Christmas photos

1. Adjust the settings on your camera.

2. Tell a story with your photos. How did the day start? Who was cooking? Family arrivals? People eating and watching TV.

3.Use flash for daytime details, eliminates shadows.

4. Blurry pictures, hold the camera with both hands and tuck your elbows to the sides of your body, hold your breath, press the shutter half way down, then snap.

5. Use the timer and you get in the picture too.

6. For Kid shots knee down to get on their level. For large family shots get on the stairs and shoot down.

7. Pay attention to the lighting and background.

When I Right Click on the Word Icon on my Taskbar, I get this Jump List, which I will demo. This is one of the greatest things in Windows 7.

Taskbar Jump Lists display recent and frequently accessed programs. To view a Jump List, right-click a Taskbar icon.

The taskbar at the bottom of your screen is what you use to launch programs and switch between them when they're open. In Windows 7 you can pin any program to the taskbar so it's always just a click away, and you can rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging.

The icons are bigger and easier to use. Hover over the icons and you'll see thumbnails of every file or window that is open in that program.

A. RESIZE your photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery: (fantastic)

The Gallery will show all your photos you have in the folder, you can put a check mark in the photos you want to resize, they will act as one, RIGHT CLICK on of the photos left click on Resize and make a selection 800x600 is nice for emailing. Now you will have the Resized photos and the Originals.

First click on the folder then a file. then at the top click on Go to gallery, now select the photos you want to resize by holding the Control Key down to highlight them, now RIGHT Click on one of the photos (they will act as one) select Resize.

After you import your photos in to the Gallery, click on a photo then at the top click on Fix, now you can also: Auto adjust, Adjust exposure, Adjust color, Crop photo, Fix red eye, etc.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded Windows Live Photo Gallery, which brought up all my photos by date. Then I just selected those I wanted to email and selected the email option. At this point, Windows Live let me select the size I wanted them to be sent. I selected small and sent about 30 at a time. (I probably could have sent more). Worked great. Fast & easy. Thanks again.

Put your CD, DVD, or media stick from you camera into your computer and this window will come up, select Import all new Items now. click on Import and all your photos will show up on the screen and you can work with them.

Select the photos you want to resize by holding the Control Key down to highlight them, now RIGHT Click on one of the photos (they will act as one) on the ribbon at the top, select Resize.

On the same ribbon you can also: Auto adjust, Straighten, Adjust color, Adjust exposure for all the photos you select. If you click on one photo it will expand it and you can do more fixes, you can also Crop photo, Fix red eye, retouch etc.

Hi Joe, I told you that I would let you know what I found out about the failed external USB hard drive with the data I feared that I had lost. It seems the problem was a faulty power supply (don't ask me how the power supply could cause such a problem, but it did). I copied the data off of the drive that I thought had gone bad to one that I knew was good and then for good measure put all the same data on another working external hard drive. Thanks for your help! Looks like I wont be purchasing a new computer after all.

A. Most of the icons on the right side of the Taskbar are running and using resources and slows your computer down also.

To eliminate some of these at Startup (you can still open the programs).

Type msconfig in the Start Search Box and hit Enter, then click on the top right tab, Startup, and uncheck those you don't need. You can always go back and check them. Go slow here, but don't be afraid, you only need about 5 or 6 programs running including your antivirus.

In Windows XP type msconfig in the Start, Run Blank

If you wish to know what is running, type it in Google or BING.

How often should I Defrag?

I usually do this every 2 months or so. To do a bang up job you should first Start, Computer, Right Click on the C drive, click on Properties, down on the right, click on:

1. Disk Cleanup, I put a check mark in each box and click OK, then click on Delete files.

2. Now click on Tools, Check Now, then I put a check mark in Automatically fix file system errors. Then click on Start.

3. Defragment Now. Now you will see Analyzing disk (this takes a few minutes.) Then it will tell you whether you need to defrag or not.

INSIGHT INFORMATION:

You never seem to have computer problems, but I have enough for us both.

While out of town, I would access my desktop at home occasionally and the response seemed to be rather slow, but I just figured it was the connection program I was using.

When I got back. I decided to download the latest System Mechanic program, just purchased from World Start and it took maybe 30 minutes to do a 50 to 60 meg download.

I decided to run two speed tests:

Test 1 Download 836.9 kbs Upload 1.30 MBPS

Test 2 Download 792.7kbs upload 1.27 MBPS

I called Insight late last night and this Sunday morning, they sent a guy about 10 am. He replaced the modem (second time this year) and all was corrected. He commented maybe the last modem was made on a Friday. Unusually short life for a modem.

Just ran a new test: Download 23.903 MBPS Upload 1.40 MBPS

Much better.

A. Only 2 things I know how to do:

1. WINDOWS 7: Create a System Repair Disc

The first thing a new Windows 7 user should do is create a System Repair Disc. You'll have access to Windows 7 diagnostic tools like Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt.

Go to Start, type Repair in the Search box, hit Enter and follow instructions.

Rather than rely on the manufacturer of your Computer to give you a repair disk, Microsoft designed Windows 7 so that you can create your own System Repair Disk. The recovery tools are:

1. Startup Repair

2. System Restore

3. Windows Complete PC Restore

4. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

5. Command Prompt

2. Snipping Tool. no matter where you are, Internet, word document, email you can draw a rectangle around what you want and save it as a .jpg file. (I use this all the time.)

3. Jump Lists

Remember in XP and Vista you clicked on Recent Items to see the last items you had opened. All Items, a jumbled list.

With the Jump List, you Right Click on the WORD Icon in the Taskbar and it will give you only the recent items you had open in WORD. You can also pin the item to the list and it will stay there, until you unpin it.

The above applies to picture files also. As you put your cursor of different folders or files it will give you the additional information. You don't have to click on it files just move your cursor over them.

A. RIGHT CLICK on your Desktop, In Windows 7 click on View. click on Auto Arrange. This puts them in alphabetically order and locks them in.

The option Align To Grid is used when your icons are close to where they should be, and this sets them in perfect alignment and keeps them in the position you want them.

If you want them to stay the way you want them, suggest you put them Align to Grid, then click on Refresh. This is not great but it is good.

2 things happened to me on November 29th.

1. I changed the batteries in the smoke alarms. Put the old battery in

my pocket sat on the porch and was reading the paper when my right

thigh got really hot, I reached in my pocket and pulled out the battery

and a penny, both were almost too hot to touch.

The terminals on the battery much have shorted out on the penny and

caused the heat.

2. Had a slight thump, thump in our car, checked the tires and found this

two inch bolt sunk all the way into the tire. The dealer fixed the tire.

Remember there is no meeting in January.

A: Both are alternatives to shutting down your computer. They save the exact state of your computer. When you start up the computer, everything is restored.

Sleep stores your computer's state in its memory. Most components are shut down, but some power is still applied to the memory.

Starting up is fast, but if power is lost, the memory is wiped.

It takes longer to wake a computer from hibernation because hibernation stores everything on the hard drive and then shuts down the computer. But it isn't susceptible to a power failure.

Q: When I drag and drop files, how do I know what is happening to them? Are they being moved, copied, or is Windows just creating a short cut?

A: One day while dragging and dropping I actually paid attention and realized that Windows does tell you what it's doing as you move the file. If you see a " + " sign in a little white box, the file is being copied. If you see an arrow, Windows is creating a shortcut . Finally, if you see nothing at all, the file is being moved.

OK, here's a new problem. What happens if you're trying to move say, a program file (a file ending in ".exe"), and Windows wants to do a shortcut instead of a move? Or maybe you want to make a copy of a file and Windows wants to move it?

Well, there's an easy solution for that as well. Just drag and drop with your RIGHT mouse button. When you release the button, you'll be given a little menu that allows you to pick Move, Copy, Create Shortcut, or Cancel.

Tips for better Christmas photos

1. Adjust the settings on your camera.

2. Tell a story with your photos. How did the day start? Who was cooking? Family arrivals? People eating and watching TV.

3.Use flash for daytime details, elimates shadows.

4. Blurry pictures, hold the camera with both hands and tuck your elbows to the sides of you body, hold you breath, press the shutter half way down, then snap.

5. Use the timer and you get in the picture too.

6. For Kid shots knee down to get on their level. For large family shots get on the stairs and shoot down.

When I Right Click on the Word Icon on my Taskbar, I get this Jump List, which I will demo. This is one of the greatest things in Windows 7.

Windows 8 Coming in 2012 ???? PCWorld

Just as you were getting comfortable with Windows 7, it looks like Windows 8 is coming in the next two years. In a post celebrating the one-year anniversary of Windows 7 -- the fastest selling OS in history -- Microsoft's Dutch Web site briefly mentioned the construction and release of its successor. It may be a 128 bit version. Windows 7 has a 32 bit and a 64 bit version. (Sometimes Microsoft comes out later than they say.)

The Internet Explorer 9 (IE9 or I9) beta was downloaded more than two million times in the first 48 hours.

Gone are the crowded toolbars, and in its place is a simple address bar with some navigation buttons (back, forward, refresh, and so on).

A. If it just developed, and you have restarted your computer and the
sound is still off, then try System Restore to a date that the sound was

Tuesday, July 13 at 7 pm, we will have our Windows7/XP/Vista Workshop.

After our Question and Answer period and we will discuss and demo:

1. Disk Cleanup: It deletes; Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Recycle Bin, Offline Web Pages, etc.

2. Error Checking (Scan Disk); (removes errors from your hard drive.)

3. Defrag. (rearranges your data for faster access) As you add and delete programs and files your, it is scattered all over the hard drive Defrag rearranges your data so there are no empty spaces and the programs and data you use the most are put into the fastest accessible portion of your hard drive.

4. System Info. Tells you all about the Hardware and Software on your computer. (More than you want to know).

5. System Restore: Restores your system to a previous date. Say you installed a new program today and your computer went haywire, use System Restore to restore it to yesterday.

6. Security Center: Manage security settings for Automatic Updates, Internet Options, and Windows Firewall.

7. Blocked senders and Request read receipt in email.

8. I think I have found a way to freeze your Desktop Icons in the locations you wish. (Knock on wood.)

A. Most of the icons on the right side of the Taskbar are running and using resources and slows your computer down also.

To eliminate some of these at Startup (you can still open the programs).

Go to Search Programs box, type in msconfig then click on the top right tab, Startup, and uncheck those you don't need. You can always go back and check them. Go slow here, but don't be afraid, you only need about 5 or 6 programs running including your antivirus.

If you wish to know what is running, type it in Google or BING.

How often should I Defrag?

I usually do this every 2 months or so. To do a bang up job you should first Start, Computer, Right Click on the C drive, click on Properties, down on the right, click on:

1. Disk Cleanup, I put a check mark in each box and click OK, then click on Delete files.

2. Now click on Tools, Check Now, then I put a check mark in Automatically fix file system errors. Then click on Start.

3. Defragment Now. Now you will see Analyzing disk (this takes a few minutes.) Then it will tell you whether you need to defrag or not.

Q. How do I change the printing from grayscale back to color?

At cartridge world they told me to use color again so it wouldn't dry up. I just can't remember how to switch it back.

A. On my Lexmark, I go to Start, Control Panel (classic view), click on Printers, RIGHT CLICK on my Lexmark printer, then click on Printing Preferences, select the options I want, then click OK.

In Windows 7, just type Lexmark in the Search Programs box, and click on your selection.

Suggestion: Don't buy ink cartridges in advance, in fact when your printer says you are getting low on ink, wait until you run out, then buy a fresh, new cartridge.

He would go to work before Alberta got up and got home after she was in bed. He loved biscuits so his wife Stella would pack his lunch with them every morning.

Back in those days they used picks and shovels to mine the coal.

Charlie died of Black Lung at age 52. I have tears in my eyes writing this, he was such a good soul.

Microsoft's Fix It software, which tries to automatically figure out what's wrong with your computer, is now available for Windows XP and Vista.
The software is in beta, and can run diagnostics for 300 common problems with Windows. When you run Fix It, you'll see a list of things to examine, such as display quality, performance, and incoming connections. Too many icons on your desktop?

Right-click the desktop and select, New, Folder.

Name the new folder Misc.

Now, drag any icons that aren't being used on a regular basis to the folder.

You have a much cleaner desktop, and if you need one of the shortcuts, open the Misc folder and there they are.

(I have seen some Desktops with 42 icons on them, this defeats the purpose of the shortcuts if you have to wade through 42 icons to find the shortcuts. I keep only two columns of shortcuts, when I get more that number, I just drag it into the Misc folder.)
