Hi, Joe,
I've been gradually 'acclimating' myself to Windows 8. Following my initial panic emails to you during the first week with my new laptop, I'm navigating the system reasonably well.

I look forward to reading your latest tips (am actually printing out the hard copies as I'm typing!). Sharing your knowledge is a gracious and valuable gift to those of us stumbling about the computer world! Thank you!

From WorldStart:  How does a surge protector work?
Answer:
http://imgsrv.worldstart.net/images/ct-images/2012/10/featureups.jpg
A surge is a term for when the voltage exceeds the standard 120V for longer than 2 nanoseconds. Common causes of surges are lightning strikes, cycling of high energy demand appliances/systems and power delivery system failures.

A surge protector has a circuit design which works normally at regular household voltages but once a surge happens will divert the extra power to the ground plug in the power outlet.
